Mets demote, then release reliever Kyle Farnsworth

CBS Sports 103+ SHARES •

Two days after saving a game as Mets closer against the rival Yankees, veteran righthanded reliever Kyle Farnsworth has been released by the team, sources said.
Farnsworth recorded his third save of the year in a victory Monday against the Yankees but was told he would no longer be the closer the next day.
The release is surprising in that Farnsworth had improved markedly from spring training, when he didn't make the team, throwing in the mid-90s lately after languishing around 90 back in Port St. Lucie.
The Mets' bullpen has been a weakness, but Farnsworth has been one of the better pitchers in their pen.
The 45-day waiver period is up Thursday related to advance-consent forms, so the Mets may have saved a bit of money by releasing Farnsworth.
